If you haven't done so, plug in the green power brick at the outlet and plug the connector in on the side of the XO. You can tell where the plug goes, right? What do you observe on the XO when it is plugged in?
Turn the XO on. What do you observe as it starts up? Any questions? If so, make notes. What do you see on the screen? What lights come on? Can you tell what they mean? What else do you see? If you miss something, if you can't write down your questions fast enough to keep up with what is happening, turn the XO off by holding the power button down for six seconds, and try again until you have all of your questions down.
Undiscoverable: Notice that I told you how to turn off the XO. This is one of the things that is hard for many people to discover, so I'm just telling you rather than leave you stuck.
We will see more such things, and we will think about whether we can make them easier for children to discover on their own. (Adults, too.) Sometimes I will let you think about some mystery for a while before giving you the answer. If you find that I don't explain something important, send me an e-mail at mailto:mokurai@earthtreasury.org, ask on the IAEP mailing list, or put it in the Wiki at Sugar Labs, on the page for The Undiscoverable.
Maybe pushing and releasing the power button could pop up an explanation for a few seconds. Do you have an idea about that? Would that be better?
Anyway, you know which is the power button one way or another. Let's try that again, but this time without the power brick. Push the power button. Unless you have a dead battery or some other problem where you may have to ask for help, you are ready for your next Discovery.
