Exporting

Once a book has been completed or finished to a satisfactory level it can be exported.  Exporting can be sent to several different outputs - not just to standard print formats - each with it's own specific needs and uses.

First lets look at the formats available for exporting:

book formatted pdf - book(PDF) : Used for the creation of printed books, the book(PDF) file can be uploaded to a print on demand service or even sent to a local printer for printing of a standard bound book.  It can also be used for printing a single copy of a book from a domestic printer.

newspaper formatted pdf - newspaper(PDF) : This format is used for printing multicolumn texts to large scale newsprint.  This can be useful for cheaply printing off books using a cheap print format and local printers.

web formatted pdf - web(PDF) : This type of production is to be read on screen.  It can be added to a website, or downloaded for off-line viewing on a computer or any compatible device.

epub : epub is used for e-book publication, it generates an e-book using the open epub format. The book can be read using any compatible device, including computers with appropriate software as well as portable devices such as the Sony Reader and Apple's iPod Touch and iPhone.

OpenOffice Rich Text format (.odt) : This output can be opened and edited in OpenOffice.org, enabling extra customisations to be added as well as conversion to Microsoft's .doc format for exchange with 3rd parties who haven't heard of free software. This can also be a good method of publishing if you want to customise the fonts and formatting of your published book but aren't proficient in CSS.

HTML : the HTML output can be embedded into any website, so an organisation is able to export a book to HTML and then embed it into their website.

Exporting a Book

Once a book is ready from the Book page, click on the Export tab. You can now set the export options for your book.

  • If none of the pre-set page sizes fits your requirements you also have the ability to enter custom page sizes with the Width and Height settings.
  • Margins can be customised using the Top, Bottom and Side Margin Settings.  When publishing to Book(PDF) you can also customise the Gutter which is the inner margin of two facing pages in a bound book.  The gutter will be lager than the Side Margin to allow for space taken up by the binding process.
  • If you want to print multi-columned pages such as when printing to newspaper, you can use the Columns and Column margin settings to define how many columns you want per page and the amount of space between each column.
  • You are able to set the style for you book using the CSS mode.  You can select either Server default or custom.  With custom selected a text box is displayed where you are able to edit and modify the CSS used to generate your book.  For a list of the fonts available when customising your CSS see the Appendix.
  • At the bottom of the advanced options you can select Grey-scale for use when printing with only black and white such as printing to newsprint.

Some Use Cases

The following are some fictional scenarios of how and why you might choose the various export options.

Web Publishing

Since joining the Organic Gardening Group on Booki it membership has grown quite remarkably and has now developed it's own website which offers pdf downloads of it's completed manuals.  You have just finished writing Growing Vine Fruit and now wish to publish it for inclusion in the Groups website.

  1. You navigate to the editing page for Growing Vine Fruit and click on the Publish tab.
  2. Leaving the Book title as Growing Vine Fruit you select web (PDF) as your Document type and CC-BY-SA as your License.
  3. Deciding that it would be useful Archive.org to have a copy of your book you leave the tick in the box next to send to archive.org
  4. Without needing to customise the publishing process any further you click on Publish this book.
  5. You see a progress bar slowly fulling up as you Booki sends Growing Vine Fruit to Objavi to be published to PDF.
  6. When the process is finished there is a link to the new book at the bottom of the page. You click on the link to download the published book to your computer which you later upload to the Organic Gardening Groups website.

Newspaper Publishing

In two weeks you will be manning a stall at a local farmer's market.  Among the items being sold at the stall are grapes from your grape vine.  You think it could be a good idea to have copies of Growing Vine Fruit to sell along side your grapes. After calling some local printers you find one that can do a small print run onto news print for you at a reasonable price, you just have to supply him with a pdf of your book formatted for news print.

  1. You navigate to the Publish tab for Growing Vine Fruit.
  2. Leaving your Book title as Growing Vine Fruit you select newspaper (PDF) as your document type and CC-BY-SA as your License.
  3. For Booki to publish to newspaper (PDF) correctly you will need to adjust some advanced settings so you click on Show advanced options.
  4. You select A3 (NZ Tabloid) for your page size as that was the size the local printer requested.
  5. You want 2 columns in your newspaper book so you type in 2 next to Columns and then 5 next to Column margin to give a 5mm margin between your columns.
  6. Finally you place a tick next to Grey-scale since you have restricted yourself to black and white printing to reduce costs.
  7. You click on Publish this book and shortly a link is created to your newspaper (PDF) book.  You download this link before emailing the pdf document to your local printer.

Book Publishing

Your newspaper formatted book proved very successful at the farmers market and you decide to set up an account with Lulu to sell print on demand versions of your book.  After checking out their website and creating an account you decide to use the A5 paper size creating a handy sized book with... ....Binding.

  1. After navigating to the Publish tab you leave the Book title as Growing Vine Fruit, you select book (PDF) for the Document type and CC-BY-SA for your License.
  2. You click Show advanced options and type in Growing Vine Fruit - Contents as your Table of Contents header.
  3. You select A5 for your Page size.
  4. Under CSS mode you select custom.  A text box opens up containing the Default CSS for you to edit.  You were wanting to change the font-family for the body so on the font-family line under body you Gillius ADF and replace it with DejaVu Sans.
  5. You also want the title of the book's front page to stand out so you scroll down the CSS text box to h1.frontpage and then add the line font-family: "Century Schoolbook L"; to h1.frontpage.
  6. You click on Publish this book and once the link has been generated you download the book formated pdf to your computer before uploading it to Lulu.com

Epub Publishing

While you were setting up Growing Vine Fruit on Lulu for print on demand you noticed that they also sell ebooks, thinking that this could be another good avenue for getting the knowledge out there you decide to generate an epub version of your book to add to your Lulu site.

  1. Under the Publish tab for Growing Vine Fruit you leave the Book title as is.
  2. You select epub for your Document type and CC-BY-SA as your License.
  3. Since you already sent a copy of your book to Archive.org you remove the tick from send to archive.org.
  4. With no advanced options needed you click on Publish this book and download the epub document once the publication process has finished, before adding it to your Lulu site.

OpenOffice Publishing

A few months after setting up your Lulu account you have had plenty of traffic obtaining copies of your book and now a local publisher has approached you about printing a run of Growing Vine Fruit.  Over a few weeks of talking with them you have come up with a book design and have finally convinced them to use the CC-BY-SA license that you have been using so far.  Although the content remains the same, there will be some stylistic changes made for the new book.  Firstly the book size is not one of the standard sizes available from Booki, it will be a small hand held text being thinner and taller than standard formats.  Next the font for the body text will be Century Gothic which is currently not available on the Booki server.  There will also need to be some forced page breaks entered to keep sub headings on the same page as their content.  A final formatting change is to wrap the text around pictures where possible.  Lastly the publisher's printing software requires the book text to be in Microsoft Word's .doc format. Since several of these formatting requirements are unavailable through CSS alterations you decide to publish Growing Vine Fruit to OpenOffice format, you can then load up the file in OpenOffice and apply the required formatting edits there before saving the document to .doc format and sending to the publisher.

  1. On Growing Vine Fruit's Publish tab you leave the title as is, change the document type to openoffice, change the License to CC-BY-SA, remove the tick from send to archive.org and then click on Show advanced options.
  2. You enter the ISBN number supplied by your publisher and then change the Page size to custom.
  3. You enter a Page width of 100 and a page height of 200
  4. All measurements are taken in mm.
  5. You enter 10 for the Top margin, Side margin and bottom Margin
  6. You type in 25mm for the Gutter.
  7. You now click on Publish this book.
  8. Once the document has been created you download it and make all required formatting changes in OpenOffice before saving to a .doc file and sending to your publisher.

There has been error in communication with booki server. Not sure right now where is the problem.
