The form of a verb that you find in a German dictionary always has the ending -en. For example to find the verb 'to do' you would look up machen. Sleep is schlafen etc
This is called the infinitiv form of the verb.
If you remove the -en from the verb you have what is known as the stem. For example 'mach' is the stem for the infinitiv form of machen, 'schlaf' is the stem for schlafen etc
